About Us:

Paul Ralph - Managing Director

Marsport's resident middle aged child. Started paddling at the age of 9 and paddled his first event - the marsh lock slalom, back in 1963 in a canvas tyne AK62 kayak built from a kit. He paddled his way to Div 3 before discovering girls, and suddenly weekends away ceased to be so appealing. Tried marathon racing and became hooked, together with White Water Racing, where he competed in Men's A for several years.

Over the years he has raced the Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race 10 times with 8 finishes including a very respectable time of 17h 35m which was only good enough for 4th place back in '79. Also won the C2 class with Dave Crooks and was a member of the record breaking K1 team from Reading and Leighton Park Canoe Club.

He still finds time to race during the summer season but has been drawn to the dark side of white water playing during the river running season.

Cherry Bapty - Financial Director

The shop's token sanity - well, she used to be our only non-paddler! Then she disovered the delights of open boating and was so taken by it she became a coach.

Cherry's paddling has always been very much aimed at relaxed pleasure but the rot really set in in 2004 when she took a group of local paddlers to race the Ardeche Descent in a C9.

Generally her trips to the river bank are in aid of work or chasing Paul round obscure marathon races around Europe.

Favourite River:    St Patrick's Stream

Current Boats:    Summersong, Jensen 18

Ambitions:    "To get Paul to spend some time on the water with her! "

Craig Hill - Marketing Director

Craig's been involved with Paul and Cherry for so long he's practically been adopted - Starting paddling in 1987, originally with the Scout organisation and then with Adventure Dolphin in Pangbourne, he's dabbled at pretty much every discipline and craft out there - refusing to accept defeat, even learning the delicate art of high kneeling C1 to prove a point. Pangbourne nudged him into the coaching scheme and he now holds coaching qualifications in kayak, open canoe, bell boating, white water racing and marathon/sprint coaching. He spent four years as the southern region's Paddlesport Development Officer, so is known to most of the clubs in the area too!

Over the years he's competed in marathon K1, K2, C1 & C2, even winning the 2004 Waterside series and Devizes to Westminster Canoe race C1 class..... When he's not competing or coaching, he can often be found playing on the Thames weirs

His latest challenge is to learn the forgotten art of high kneeling C1, and attempt DW in one - details can be seen here: Craig's Blog

Richard Lovell - Coaching Guru

He may have a full time job elsewhere, but it's amazing how often Richard turns up at the shop - helping run our coaching courses, aiding in the development of boats and generally helping the business run.

His passion for paddling is so great, his new born baby was on the water within the first week!
